Zombie Attack on Sioux Falls!

Happy Halloween!

Something only the CPJ cats could get roped into...

Today (Friday Oct 28) we're dressing up as monsters and zombies and
terrorizing downtown Sioux Falls! Seriously, at 3 PM we're meeting at
the Funk Wizard peeps' house at 324 Elm, dressing up and getting made
up as Halloween monsters, heading to and jumping on a reserved bus at
the Coffee Cup on the interstate, and then walking down 41st Street
and downtown Sioux Falls. We'll be handing out fliers for the upcoming
Funk Wizard show "Musical Monster Mayhem," blocking traffic for a
cause! (the cops and town have already been notified, and we're hoping
for press!)

Sound like fun? Come join us! We'll be returning around 8 pm, so we're
only asking for about five hours of time. Costumes are provided, and
for your efforts you get a free ticket to next Tuesday's show at the
Washington Pavillion! To sweeten the deal even more, Funk Wizard is
letting us table for the Prairie Fire at the show, and if profits are
made, making a donation to the Veggie Bus conversion!

You can't miss out. When will you ever get another chance to join a
zombie invasion of South Dakota's largest city?

3 PM at 324 Elm (corner of Elm and Dartmouth)-BE THERE!

Demo Yesterday & CPJ Tonite!

Greetings everyone!

Yesterday we held a demonstration outside the Clay County Courthouse,
marking the 2,000th U.S. soldier's death in Iraq. Already, the
official total is 2,005-and remember, these official numbers represent
"battlefield" deaths in Iraq, and are suspected of being far lower
than the actual number of Americans killed by the war (some estimates
are as high as 9,000, incorporating G.I. deaths in European hospitals
as well as "on the battlefield."

At least a dozen demonstrators lined the Courthouse lawn at 4 PM, with
signs that made our opposition to war clear. Pictures were taken that
we will try to get out as soon as possible.

Last nite's Essential Cinema went well. We watched Stephanie Black's
"Life & Debt," a beautiful expose of the economic raping of Jamaica by
the wealthier nations, through "debt-restructuring" and similar
programs. Jamaica used to be self-sufficient; now they are producing
exports, and forced to buy imports from other, wealthier, more
powerful countries. An IMF spokesman defends the agency thusly when
talking about the invasion of McDonald's in the country: "Why should
Jamaicans not have the freedom to buy what other people in the world
have the freedom to buy?" Freedom to buy!

Next week's Essential Cinema will be "Dark Days," a documentary
depicting New York City's homeless underground-literally. Thousands of
people have been found under the city, living in tunnels and old
subway stations. Check it out: 6 PM Wednesday in the U. Brew, Coyote
Student Center.

Tonite at 7 PM the Community for Peace and Justice will be meeting in
Hoy B, Coyote Student Center, USD. Come and check out all the awesome
projects we're working on-a coffeehouse, a bus running on dumpster
grease, self-published magazines, and kicking military recruiters out
of schools!

On Friday, we will be working with Funk Wizard Productions to promote
their new show, Musical Monster Mayhem. We're travelling to Sioux
Falls' downtown, where we will drum up support in a publicity stunt,
dressing up as monsters and handing out fliers. If you're interested
in helping, there is a free ticket in it for you, and if you come to
the meeting tonite you'll find out the deal is even sweeter :)

A look ahead:
On Tuesday November 1, we will be tabling to promote the Prairie Fire
issue #4. We'll be in the booth in the Coyote Student Center from 10
AM to 2 PM, so if you'd like to check out the issue, come visit. Other
ways to get your hands on it: If you live in Vermillion, we'll deliver
a copy for donation. Email us at cpj@usd.edu with your addy. Or send a
donation to PO Box 601, Vermillion, SD 57069, and we'll send you a
copy.

November 18-21: School of the Americas trip. We're trying to get the

Funk Wizard Productions is asking for dozens of volunteers to dress up as monsters to promote their upcoming show, Musical Monster Mayhem! In return volunteers get free tickets to the show, a ride up to Sioux Falls, get to legally terrorize the city's downtown, and the Community can promote the new Prairie Fire #4 and Veggie Bus Projects by tabling at the show! If you are interested email fnkwzrd@yahoo.com before Friday October 28, as that is most likely the day we will be going up there! For more info on the show.

Also, our comrades in Amnesty International are tabling this week in the CSC to end human trafficking. Stop by to help them out and sign a letter-it takes less than a minute and makes quite a difference!

Bring 'em Home! Before things get worse. (See #1
note on Syria) Iraqis most strenuously invite us to leave
(See #2 note on British Ministry of Defence poll)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

#1 The United States is indeed pursuing a hard-edged regime change strategy for Syria. It’s happening right before your eyes. With the ever-complacent U.S. media itself bogged down in Iraq, and with the supine U.S. Congress unwilling to challenge our foreign policy apparatus, Syria is under the gun. As in Iraq, the United States is aggressively pursuing a regime change there without the slightest notion of what might come next or who might replace President Bashar Assad. Might it be the fanatical Muslim Brotherhood, by far the most powerful single force in largely Sunni Syria? Might the country fragment into pieces, as Iraq is now doing? The Bush administration doesn’t know, just as they didn’t know what might happen to Iraq in 2003. But they are going ahead anyway http://www.tompaine.com/articles/20051024/syria_the_next_iraq.php

#2October 23, 2005 -- The Telegraph (UK)
IRAQIS SUPPORT ATTACKS ON BRITISH TROOPS

Millions of Iraqis believe that suicide attacks against British troops are justified, a secret military poll commissioned by senior officers has revealed.

The poll, undertaken for the Ministry of Defence and seen by The Sunday Telegraph, shows that up to 65 per cent of Iraqi citizens support attacks and fewer than one per cent think Allied military involvement is helping to improve security in their country.

It demonstrates for the first time the true strength of anti-Western feeling in Iraq after more than two and a half years of bloody occupation.

The nationwide survey also suggests that the coalition has lost the battle to win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people, which Tony Blair and George W Bush believed was fundamental to creating a safe and secure country. . . .

The survey was conducted by an Iraqi university research team that, for security reasons, was not told the data it compiled would be used by coalition forces. It reveals:

- Forty-five per cent of Iraqis believe attacks against British and American troops are justified - rising to 65 per cent in the British-controlled Maysan province;

- 82 per cent are "strongly opposed" to the presence of coalition troops;

- less than one per cent of the population believes coalition forces are responsible for any improvement in security;

- 67 per cent of Iraqis feel less secure because of the occupation;

- 43 per cent of Iraqis believe conditions for peace and stability have worsened;

- 72 per cent do not have confidence in the multi-national forces.

The opinion poll, carried out in August, also debunks claims by both the US and British governments that the general well-being of the average Iraqi is improving in post-Saddam Iraq. . . .

2,000 Dead Candlelight Vigil

Hello Community Folk,

The 13 (!) Vermillion activists that traveled to Rapid City over the weekend had a great time. We sold all the Prairire Fire #4 copies, made almost $300.00, networked with tons of activists, tabled at a Hudson Falcons show, and made it to both days of the South Dakota Peace and Justice Center Annual Meeting.

An important and unfortunate milestone is approaching for the US occupation of Iraq: almost 2,000 American soldiers (officially) have been killed. On the day after the 2,000 has died, there will be demonstrations, candlelight vigils, and protests nationwide in hundreds of locations (more info: https://www.afsc.org/2000/).

In Vermillion, we will be meeting at the Clay County Courthouse from 4 to 6 PM, the day AFTER the 2,000 US soldier has been killed. At the moment, it appears that will be Tuesday or Wednesday. Please spread the word about this. Bring banners, loud voices, energy, and supplies for a candlelight vigil.

We shouldn't have to push hard for large numbers to show up here. The American people know-or should know-how wrong the invasion of Iraq was and how disastrous it continues to be. Let's stop the war now, before any more lives are lost!

BOOGDISH SHOW TONITE!

PRAIRIE FIRE #4 OUT!
We printed 50 copies of the Prairie Fire issue #4 to bring to Rapid City for the weekend-and had no trouble selling 'em all. So we're soon going to print a batch of a hundred or more and distribute them widely. Why are we so confident that we'll move hundreds more? Because its the best damned zine ever, that's why! Find out for yourself-there are several ways to get a copy:

1) We'll be tabling for the Prairie Fire in the CSC this week, hopefully. Or next week. Keep an eye out.
2) Send a few dollars to our address: PO Box 601, Vermillion, SD 57069. Make sure to provide a return address so we can mail you a bunch of posters and the zine.
3) Soon you'll be able to pick up copies at Ernie November's in Sioux Falls. Not yet but soon.
4) Email us with your address if you're in Vermillion and we'll deliver a copy.

UPCOMING CPJ EVENTS
Essential Cinema at 6 PM on Wednesday. We will be showing "Life and Debt," a stunning visual critique of how neoliberal economic policies are destroying the island of Jamaica. If you have ever wanted to know more about corporate globalization, this film presents a practical, comprehensive, and real-world example of its sources, practices, and atrocious effects. For more info: http://www.lifeanddebt.org/

Throughout the week, Amnesty International will be tabling in the CSC to bring awareness to the continued international crime of human trafficking. Stop by their table to support them, and if you can help with tabling please email: mtdunham@usd.edu.

On Thursday, the Community for Peace and Justice will meet at 7 PM in Hoy B in the CSC. Come meet the rowdiest bunch on campus and bring the ruckus to small town South Dakota!

VEGGIE BUS!
We're working hard on the Veggie Bus, now we need to get it done! In hopes of taking it to the School of the Americas Vigil on November 18, the time has come for us to start buying parts and beginning the fuel conversion. If you can help out with mechanical knoweldge or financial contributions, these are greatly appreciated. We've raised over $1,000 so far, but still need at least $500 for parts, registration, and insurance. Help us make this dream come true! Send financial contributions to CPJ, PO Box 601, Vermillion, SD 57069.

Keep in touch, and let's make the demonstration-coming any day now-rock! Let's make our voices heard!

CPJ Tonite!

hello all,

if anyone tried to make it to Dark Days last nite, well sorry. the board of regents took over a lot of the CSC and it messed with a lot of people's events. next week, Essential Cinema will be showing "Life and Debt," a documentary of the effects of neoliberal trade, the International Monetary Fund, and other destructive policies that have all but destroyed the island of Jamaica.

TONIGHT 7 PM, the rowdiest bunch on campus meets in the HOY B room of the CSC. We will be discussing the trip to Rapid City tomorrow to the South Dakota Peace and Justice Center Annual Meeting, and also just maybe might have the fourth issue of the Prairie Fire Magazine printed! Come check it out regardless, its always an amusing time and we have a lot of interesting things going on.

Most importantly, we'll be updated on the status of the Veggie Bus project, after fundraising over the past two weeks.

See you there!

Dark Days & Annual Meeting

Hi hi!

Tonight at 6 PM Essential Cinema will be presenting "Dark Days," the shocking, amazing story of thousands of "homeless" people living under the subways of New York City. Its a truly phenomenal documentary which will make you cry and laugh at the same time. Even if you've seen it before, watch it again- it gets better and better every time!

On Friday we are leaving for the South Dakota Peace and Justice Center Annual Meeting in Rapid City. We need to know how many people are going, who needs rides, and who can provide rides. So far Norma and Jerry Wilson have offered a ride, and Julie Day. We will probably need another car, however, and tho gas is expensive the SDPJC has offerred to help with a $50 "scholarship" for those who want to make it.

There are about 6 people in need of a ride. Does anyone have a car?

Community News 10/17

Hello friends! Community news from the last week or so, followed by upcoming events and a look forward.

DIVERSITY WEEK TABLING
At last Thursday's meeting we discussed some the of the week's events, including tabling. We were in the Coyote Student Center for two days, distributed some Prairie Fire magazines and other literature. A few cats painted a nice banner for the CPJ to use whenever tabling. It's very colorful and eye-catching. Since it was Diversity Week on campus, starting with Native American Day on Monday, we had good friends on either side of us in the CSC: 10% Society, Amnesty International, and more.

On Wednesday the CPJ supported Amnesty International's showing of "Hotel Rwanda," a powerful film dramatizing the Hutu's genocide of Tutsis in the 90s. A student at USD and Ugandan survivor spoke on his personal experiences at the time.

STUDENTS FOR SENSIBLE DRUG POLICY
Students for Sensible Drug Policy held their first meeting to set a time and place for future gatherings. Regular meetings from now on will be at 3 pm at the U. Brew every Tuesday. Join us as educate the public about the horrors of the drug war and what would constitute a more humane policy on drug use and abuse. To find out more please email ssdpusd@hotmail.com.

VEGGIE BUS
Yesterday, Sunday October 16, we held a fundraiser for the Veggie Bus project at the Washington Street Arts Center. It went fairly well, with about twenty non-CPJ members showing up and over $200.00 raised. Some community folk are more informed and excited about the project. We still need to raise almost $1000.00 in the next month to finish the conversion from diesel to vegetable oil. There is also a lot of work to be done with designing a fuel tank for the bus. If you can help let us know. To get involved with the Veggie Bus email fueledbyveggies@gmail.com

PROGRESSIVE VERMILLION
Some member of the CPJ and other organizations are networking activists' efforts in our town under the banner of "Progressive Vermillion." So far PV consists of a blog (http://www.progressivevermillion.blogspot.com) and email list to help coordinate our work and increase cooperation, unity, and mutual aid amongst progressives. Former Death Row Inmate Speaks in Rapid

For timely release before October 21, 2005

Former Death Row inmate will speak in Rapid City,

extends special invitation to bikers
The public in general and motorcyclists in particular are invited to
hear Ray Krone speak in Rapid City, Friday, October 21, 7:15 PM, at
Mother Butler Center. Krone was unjustly condemned to Arizona's Death
Row in 1992 for a murder he did not commit.

Mr. Krone had a good family upbringing in Pennsylvania. He played
Little League baseball, was in Boy Scouts, faithfully attended Sunday
school, sang in his church choir, made good grades, served honorably
in the US Air Force, and went to work for the US Postal Service.
Mistakenly caught in a web of events that began December 28, 1991,
Krone found himself demoted from being regarded as an average
law-abiding citizen to being labeled a vicious, subhuman criminal, the
lowest of the low.

Krone lost ten years of his life to a desperate struggle to establish
his innocence. Finally DNA tests totally exonerated him, and he was
released in 2002. His harrowing experience has led him to declare
unequivocally, "The death penalty system is broken -- and it can't be
fixed."

Following Mr. Krone's presentation and discussion with the audience,
attendees who feel ready to do so will have an opportunity to sign the
Declaration of Life. The Declaration is a formal, witnessed affidavit
by which signers abjure use of the death penalty in case of their own
murder. Signers do not intend that murderers should not be held
seriously to account but only that the State should not kill in
retribution for the crime. Witnesses and notaries will be present to
serve the signers.

Ray Krone is brought to Rapid City by Interfaith Task Force Against
the Death Penalty, a sponsored project of South Dakota Peace & Justice
Center. The West River Catholic Diocese Pro-Life Commission is
cosponsoring the evening in observance of the October 21-23 National
Weekend of Faith in Action Against the Death Penalty, an annual
weekend when people of all religions are invited to deeply consider
the faith implications of the death penalty. An indigenous drum group
will perform in a prayerful spirit. Pastors for congregations of
several denominations will lead the Friday evening program. Mr. Krone
belongs to an Evangelical Lutheran congregation near his home in

SDPJC Annual Meeting

SD Peace & Justice Center is privileged to hold the 2005 annual
membership meeting Friday evening October 21 and all day October 22 in
Rapid City -- the only South Dakota town whose governing council has
had the care for freedom to pass a resolution of official concern
about the USA Patriot Act. [See notes on the Patriot Act at the end
of this email]

Each year at annual meeting three categories of award are given to
honor members whose lives and work help to make our world more
peaceful and just. From a list of nominees submitted by members
across the state, our executive board selects award recipients.
Reply to this email with your nominations for:

See YOU at Mother Butler Center, October 21 & 22
-------------------------------------------------------------

Congress passed the Patriot Act 45 days after the 9/11
attacks with virtually no debate. Now, Congress has
time to bring the law in line with the Constitution. The
House bill -- HR 3199 -- is terrible news for civil
liberties. The Senate amendments to the House bill
while not perfect, are a substantial improvement. The
House and Senate versions will be the subject of a
conference committee to resolve differences some-
time after Congress returns from Oct 8-16 recess.

Meatier Congressional Research Service summary of Senate improvements

Need motivation to stay active about the Patriot Act?
Check these two chilling articles by Paul Craig Roberts
"The Police State Is Closer Than You Think"
http://antiwar.com/roberts/?articleid=7556
"American Has Fallen . . . . "
http://www.lewrockwell.com/roberts/roberts122.html

It's not too late for action. Last week (10/4/05)
leading business organizations endorsed the Senate
version of the Patriot Act reauthorization. These
included the US Chamber of Commerce, the National
Association of Manufacturers, the National Association
of Realtors, the Association of Corporate Counsel,
the Financial Services Roundtable and Business Civil
Liberties, Inc. http://www.aclu.org/SafeandFree/SafeandFree.cfm?ID=19213&c=206

No one from the SD congressional delegation will
be in the conference, but we can ask them to register
concerns with the conferees. Ask your business friends
to do the same.

Directions to 4-H Center: Turn east at north edge of town on 181st

People should come from miles around to hear how powerful interests
are trying to override the will of the majority in several SD locales
-- with more and worse to come. The SAVE OUR VOTE Initiative is the
only way we are going to preserve our right to local
self-determination that is being challenged by powerful and moneyed
interests. So, if you don't want
family-scale livestock farms driven out by animal factories with acres
of manure lagoons, and continuing threat to water, public health, and
local social structure
nude juice bars down the road
biker bars and rowdy entertainment within howling distance of
indigenous sacred sites
Better get cracking. Get signatures on the SAVE OUR VOTE petition!

All Our Blogs

Hey folks, we've been working hard to get a real nice internet presence going. Some of you might have already read "Tokala Resistance", a blog of my writings. We have now changed some things and have a half-dozen other blogs going. Too much? It's not as pointless as it sounds!

First off, why blog? Because for some reason, blogs are the hottest thing on the internet, and its way easier to make one and maintain it than it is to fool around with a big website. Also, many services and news networks are creating blogging tools, such as http://southdakota123.com. This website is updated many times daily with the latest blog entries from the entire SD political spectrum-including Tokala Resistance. Because TR is on their site, thousands of journalists, politicans, teachers, and policy people have been checking out our crazy thoughts, for better or worse!

If you want to help out with any of the blogs, what we need most of all is someone to simply write information for them. email me for help and id be glad to teach how to do it. Here are the new blogs we have created for our network:

HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER http://www.sdradicals.blogspot.com
blog purpose: to provide an online publisher for us to post our thoughts on current events. it is quite popular worldwide (we have readers in the department of defense, argentina, iraq, italy, nypd, palestine, all over sd) and is indexed on http://southdakota123.com.

COMMUNITY FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE http://vcpj.blogspot.com
blog purpose: to post upcoming events, news, etc from the CPJ. it will be nice because all of our posts are archived so they can help us write a history in the future.

PROGRESSIVE VERMILLION http://progressivevermillion.blogspot.com
blog purpose: be a broader events/news calendar for all vermillion groups, such as %10 Society, Tiospaye, Coffeeloft.org, Amnesty. it would have been nice if everyone would just use the cpj's blog but i think this will work better.

STUDENTS FOR SENSIBLE DRUG POLICY http://sdpd.blogspot.com
blog purpose: events and news for the spin-off SSDP group.

PRAIRIE FIRE ZINE http://prairiefireburning.blogspot.com/
blog purpose: archive and online place to find all past pf articles and news.

LET US KNOW IF YOU NEED A BLOG FOR YOUR CPJ PROJECT!!! WE CAN SET IT UP EASILY!

Garrison Keillor Tonite & CPJ Meeting

Garrison Keillor describes the Republican Party:

"...the party of hairy-backed swamp developers and corporate shills, faith-based economists, fundamentalist bullies with Bibles, Christians of convenience, freelance racists, misanthropic frat boys, shrieking midgets of AM radio, tax cheats, nihilists in golf pants, brownshirts in pinstripes, sweatshop tycoons, hacks, fakirs, aggressive dorks, Lamborghini libertarians, people who believe Neil Armstrong's moonwalk was filmed in Roswell, New Mexico, little honkers out to diminish the rest of us, Newt's evil spawn and their Etch-A-Sketch president, a dull and rigid man suspicious of the free flow of information and of secular institutions, whose philosophy is a jumble of badly sutured body parts trying to walk."

TONITE!
Garrison Keillor speaks at the Dome at 7 PM.

THE CPJ IS MEETING IN THE CSC AT 6 PM FOR A QUICK DISCUSSION AND THEN WE'RE ALL HEADING TO HEAR KEILLOR'S TALK!

Join us & happy d-days!
